Poor students are eligible for scholarship from standard I

The officials of Department of Education in the districts, who misinterpret that minority student from Standard I to V would not be eligible to avail themselves of scholarship under Pre-matric Scholarship scheme of the Union Government would be taken to task, warned T. Rizwan Ahmed, Manager, Tamil Nadu Minorities Development Corporation, Chennai.

Speaking at the awareness meeting on 'Minorities cluster development programme' here on Thursday, Mr. Ahmed said that with the objective of spreading education amongst Other Backward Community students, a scheme of Pre-matric Scholarship was introduced in Tamil Nadu by the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation, New Delhi.

Under the scheme it has been proposed to award scholarship to school going children of poorer OBC parents. Students from the minority community from classes I to X would be eligible to avail this scholarship. The applicants would be selected based on merit and means.

The scholarship for day-scholars is Rs.25 per month from class I to V, Rs.40 per month from class VI to VIII, and Rs.50 per month in classes IX and X.

Scholarship for hostellers is Rs.200 per month from class III to VIII, and Rs.250 per month in classes IX and X.

"Though students from class I - V are eligible to avail this scholarship, some of the education department officials in the State including Ramanathapuram are allegedly rejecting the applications saying that the scheme was available only for students from class VI - X. This is a misinterpretation of the norms and anyone who rejects the applications based on this wrong argument will be taken to task. Public who face such problem can immediately contact the Commission for Minorities," said Mr. Ahmed.

Deputy Manager (Projects), National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation, Nixon Mathur, Deputy Manager (Finance), National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation, Manoj Punia, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, Tirunelveli, F. Abdul Razick, representatives of various minorities' organisations participated in the meeting.
