Three Hijri Years in 2008

The Gregorian year 2008 will see three Hijri years, Arabic daily Al Khaleej said quoting Jordanian Astronomical Society on Sunday.

The last nine days of Dhu Al Hijja 1428 will fall in the first days of January 2008, and then to be followed by the Hijri year of 1429, the society said in a statement.

The last days of December 2008 will see the start of the Hijri year 1430.

This means that year 2008 will see the end of 1428, the complete year of 1429 and the beginning of 1430, the society explained in its statement.

Having three Hijri years in a Gregorian year happens once every 33 years, which means 2041 will have three lunar years.

Petroleum Formation

4- He brings out the pasture
5- Then turns it into a blackish floodwater
87-The Most High, 4-5
Petroleum is primarily the outcome of a long process during which herbage like algae and fern in the interstices of rocks is exposed to the chemical effects of various bacteria. Today the origin of petroleum is believed to be organic material. Pastures created before man was created were destined to turn in time to petroleum within the framework of the ecological balance of the world. Oily organic residues decomposed beneath the floor of the seas for millions of years. The underlying oily substance eventually was transformed into petroleum. Petroleum presents the properties of “floodwater.” Petroleum, more often than not, moves away from where it was originally formed. It does not have a settling property. Petroleum behaves like flood liquid, traveling long distances and collecting at spots where it comes across hard rocks without pores. Petroleum beds have been discovered in places where they were found as deposits, hindered from continuing their course.
In brief, petroleum, as described in the verses, is
1. made of organic matter,
2. blackish and
3. moves like floodwater.

PETROLEUM’S PLACE IN OUR LIFE
Until the mid-nineteenth century, crude petroleum was collected at places where it had leaked to the surface. Because it mixed with water where animals quenched their thirst and with wells drilled for drinking water, it was considered to be a nuisance. In the 1850s Ferris, and Kier who succeeded him, initiated studies that led to its use as fuel for lamps. Edwin L. Drake discovered petroleum beds at a depth of 21 meters, on August 27, 1859. As petroleum was more reliable than whale fishing and much cheaper to be consumed as lamp oil there was a ready market; and the petroleum era was thus ushered in.
God had devised the composition of this substance in such a way that it serves different purposes in many aspects of our life. Some of the best known derivatives of petroleum are fuel oil, petrol, and paraffin oil. Derivatives less known find their usage in the manufacture of candles and wax, perfumes and cosmetics, even in substances used in cheese production wherein it prevents the cheese’s decomposition. Still other petrol oils are used in the following products: insecticides, acetone used in nail polish, artificial rubber, plastic material, chemicals used in the production of detergents and certain drugs containing petroleum derivatives. Last but not least, many textile products also contain petroleum in their composition.
The story, whose beginnings go back to the decomposition of pasture, continues with the petroleum beds in the depths of the soil, with the production of detergents, t-shirts and nail polish. In verses 4 and 5 of the sura The Most High, there are allusions to petroleum. The three verses that precede it mention that God said that everything was given in due order and proportion. 1- Glorify the name of your Lord, The Most High 2- Who creates and proportions 3- Who determines in due order and guides. 87-The Most High, 1-3

Significant Changes in Sleep Pattern Can Affect Mortality Risk

The study found that decreasing nightly sleep from 6, 7, or 8 hours doubles the risk for cardiovascular death, while increasing sleep from 7 or 8 hours doubles the risk for non cardiovascular death.

"If you have a regular pattern — 6, 7, or 8 hours — and you maintain that over time, that's protective against premature mortality," said Jane E. Ferrie, PhD, a senior research fellow in department of epidemiology and public health at University College, London, in the United Kingdom, and lead author of the study.
"If you move out of that to the 9-hours-or-more category, that seems to increase all-cause mortality and the group of deaths that increases is the non  cardiovascular deaths. If you go to the short end of the spectrum, you increase your risk for cardiovascular mortality."

Changing Sleep Patterns

While other studies have looked at associations of sleep and mortality, this is the first to look at the health effects of significant changes in sleep patterns over time, Dr. Ferrie told Medscape Psychiatry.

The Whitehall II study of London-based civil servants aged 35 to 55 years began enrolling participants in 1985 with baseline (phase 1) screening continuing until early 1988. Data collection for phase 3 took place in 1992–1993. Both phases involved a clinical evaluation, including measurement of cardiovascular risk factors (body-mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol), and self-administered questionnaires that included questions about duration of sleep. Participants in phase 1 selected from these sleep categories; 5 hours or less; 6 hours; 7 hours; 8 hours; and 9 hours or more. For phase 3, the response categories of 1 to 12 hours of sleep were collapsed to form categories identical to the initial phase.

Researchers collected data on 9781 participants at phase 1 and on 7729 in phase 3. Mortality data were available from the National Health Services central registry until September 2004, a mean of 17.1 years from phase 1 and 11.8 years from phase 3.

Double Mortality Risk

The study found a U-shaped association in both phases between sleep and subsequent all-cause mortality. It also showed that decreasing sleep from 6, 7, or 8 hours doubled the cardiovascular mortality risk (fully adjusted hazard ratio for cardiovascular disease of 2.04) and that increasing sleep from 7 or 8 hours also doubled the risk for death, but for noncardiovascular mortality (fully adjusted hazard ratio for noncardiovascular deaths of 2.06).

("Normal" sleep categories of 6, 7, and 8 hours had to be pooled because researchers did not have enough data to look at the categories separately, they note.)

The link between decreased hours of sleep and higher cardiovascular mortality risk seems to make some sense: Short sleep duration is a risk factor for weight gain, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes, the authors write. Short sleep is also accompanied by increased cortisol levels and abnormal growth hormone secretion and has been associated with hypertension and some cardiovascular diseases, they said. "It's fairly obvious what's going on there," Dr. Ferrie added.

Link Between Deaths and Long Sleep Unclear

However, the link between deaths and longer sleep patterns is not as clear. "At the other end of the spectrum, until we have sufficient deaths where we can see what is making up that noncardiovascular group of deaths, we can't explore that any further," said Dr. Ferrie. "We really don't know what's driving that." She did say, though, that long sleep is associated with depression and that researchers may want to take a look at the role of increased cancer deaths or trauma deaths among patients changing to a long sleep pattern.

This new research is bound to generate a lot of interest among sleep researchers, she added. "I think lot of people will look at this . . . and hopefully they will be able to elucidate what's making up those noncardiovascular deaths," said Dr. Ferrie.

A significant change in sleep patterns may be a red flag for some underlying disease, she said. "If somebody comes to you and they're now reporting having moved from a normal sleep pattern either to the very short end of the sleep spectrum or the long end of the sleep spectrum and that appears to be a pattern that's continuing over time and is not their regular pattern, then that is probably a marker of something."

Sleep experts are even discussing the merits of restricting sleep of people who regularly sleep 9 or more hours per night, she said.

Android Developer Challenge

Cool apps that surprise and delight mobile users, built by developers like you, will be a huge part of the Android vision. To support you in your efforts, Google has launched the Android Developer Challenge, which will provide $10 million in awards -- no strings attached -- for great mobile apps built on the Android platform.

How It Works

The award money will be distributed equally between two Android Developer Challenges:

  • Android Developer Challenge I: We will accept submissions from January 2 through March 3, 2008
  • Android Developer Challenge II: This part will launch after the first handsets built on the platform become available in the second half of 2008

In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries received by March 3 will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. Those selected will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten $275,000 awards and ten $100,000 awards.

Build Your Favorite Mobile Application

We welcome all types of applications but are looking to reward innovative, useful apps that make use of Android's capabilities to deliver a better mobile experience. Here are some suggested areas of focus to get you started:

  • Productivity and collaboration such as email, IM, calendar, etc.
  • Gaming
  • News and information
  • Rethinking of traditional user interfaces
  • Use of mash-up functionality
  • Use of location-based services
  • Humanitarian benefits
