Special Class Railway Apprentices (SCRA) Examination 2011


1. SCRA examination for selection of candidates for appointment as Special Class Railway Apprentices in Mechanical Department of Indian Railways will be held by the Union Public Service Commission on 31st July, 2011 in accordance with the Rules published by the Ministry of Railways (Railways Board) in the Gazette of India dated the 26th March, 2011.

2. The approximate number of SCRA Job Vacancies, to be filled on the results of the SCRA examination 2011 is  42. 

 Note : Four vacancies in SCRA are reserved for physically challenged candidates belonging to Orthopaedically Handicapped having functional classifications OA, OL. 

The number of SCRA vacancies 2011 mentioned above is liable to alteration. Reservation will be made for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Physically Disabled categories in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the Government.

Important of SCRA 2011 :

1. Candidates to Ensure their Eligibility for the SCRA 2011 Examination : 

 The Candidates applying for the SCRA examination 2011 should ensure that they fulfill all eligibility conditions for admission to SCRA 2011 examination.

Their SCRA admission at all the stages of the SCRA examination will be purely provisional subject to satisfying the prescribed SCRA Exam eligibility 2011 conditions.

Mere issue of admission SCRA certificate to the candidate will not imply that his / her candidature has been finally cleared by the Union Public Service Commission.

The Union Public Service Commission take up verification of eligibility conditions with reference to original documents only after the candidate has qualified for SCRA interview /  Personality Test.

2. SCRA Application Form 2011 :

SCRA Online Application Form 2011

(a) Candidates may apply Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination SCRA 2011 Online application form by using the websitehttp://www.upsconline.nic.in. Detailed instructions for filling up SCRA Online applications are available on the above mentioned website.

SCRA Offline Application Form 2011

(b) Candidates may also apply SCRA Offline in the new Common Application form (Form-E) devised by the Union Public Service Commission for SCRA examination 2011, which can be purchased from the designated Head Post Offices / Post Offices  (specified in Appendix III of the Notice) throughout the country against cash payment of  30/- (Rupees Thirty Only).  Each such Form can be used only once and only for one UPSC SCRA examination 2011.

In case of any difficulty in obtaining Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination Application Form 2011 from the designated HPOs / POs, the candidates  should immediately contact the concerned post Master or UPSC’s “Forms Supply Monitoring Cell” over Telephone No. 011-23389366 / Fax No. 011 – 23387310.

(c) Candidates are advised to read carefully  the Instructions for filling up the SCRA Online Application Form 2011 given in Appendix-II (A) and instructions for SCRA Offline Applications  given in  Appendix II (B) of the Notice.

3. SCRA Last Date for Receipt of Applications :

(a) SCRA Online Application 2011 : The SCRA Online Applications can be filled upto 25th April  2011 till 11.59 PM after which the link will be disabled.

(b) SCRA Offline Application 2011 : 

All SCRA Offline applications must reach the following address either by hand or by Post / Speed Post or by Courier, on or before the 25th April 2011.

Candidates should note that application form for SCRA 2011 will be received by hand, only one at a time, at the designated counter(s) and not in bulk, till 5 PM only.

However, in respect of candidates residing abroad or in certain remote localities specified in para 6 of this Notice the SCRA Exam last date for receipt of Special Class Railway Apprentices application form by Post / Speed Post only (not by Hand or by Courier) is 02nd May 2011.

4. Penalty for Wrong Answers :

Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.

SCRA Exam 2011 Educational Qualification

For admission to the SCRA examination a candidate :

Must have passed in the first or second division, the Intermediate or an equivalent Examination of a University or Board approved by the Government of India with Mathematics and atleast one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the Special Class Railway Apprentices SCRA examination.

Graduates with Mathematics and atleast one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as their degree subjects may also apply, or

Must have passed in the first or second division, the Higher Secondary (12 years) Examination under 10 plus 2 pattern of School Education with Mathematics and atleast one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the SCRA examination, or

 Must have passed the first year Examination under the three year degree course of a university or the first examination of the three year diploma course in Rural Service of the National Council for Rural Higher Education or the third year Examination for promotion to the 4th year of the four year B.A. / B.Sc. (Evening College) Course of the Madras University with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the Special Class Railway Apprentices examination provided that before joining the degree / diploma course he passed the Higher Secondary examination or the Pre-University or equivalent examination in the first or second division. 

Candidates who have passed the first / second year examination under the three-years degree course in the first or second division with Mathematics and either Physics or Chemistry as subjects of the Examination may also apply; provided the first / second year examination is conducted by a University; or

1. Must have passed in the first or second division the Pre-Engineering Examination of a University, approved by the Government of India; or

2. must have passed in the first or second division the Pre-Professional / Pre-Technological Examination of any Indian University or a recognised Board, with Mathematics and at least, one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the SCRA examination conducted one year after the Higher Secondary or Pre-University stage; or

3. must have passed the first year examination under the five year Engineering Degree Course of a University : Provided that before joining the Degree Course, he passed the Higher Secondary Examination or pre-University or equivalent examination in the first or second division.

Candidates who have passed the first year Examination of the five-year Engineering Degree Course in the first or second division may also apply provided the first year Examination is conducted by a University; or

Must have passed in the first or second division the Pre-Degree Examination of the Universities of Kerala and Calicut with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the Special Class Railway Apprentices examination 2011.

Note I :

Candidates who are not awarded any specific division by the University / Board either in the Intermediate or any other examination mentioned above will be considered educationally eligible provided their aggregate of marks falls within the range of marks for first or second division as prescribed by the University / Board concerned. 

 Note II :

Candidates who have appeared at an examination Special Class Railway Apprentice, the passing of which would render them eligible to appear at the SCRA examination 2011 but have not been informed of the results, may apply for admission to the SCRA examination. Candidates who intend to appear at such a qualifying examination may also apply.

Such candidates will be admitted to the SCRA examination 2011, if otherwise eligible but their SCRA admission would be deemed to be provisional and subject to cancellation, if they do not produce proof of having passed the requisite qualifying examination along with the detailed Special Class Railway Apprentices application form 2011 which will be required to be submitted by the candidates who qualify on the results of the written part of the SCRA examination 2011.

Note III :

In exceptional cases, the Union Public Service Commission may treat a candidate who has not any of the SCRA Exam qualifications prescribed in this rule as educationally qualified provided that he possesses SCRA qualifications the standard of which in the opinion of the Union Public Service Commission, justifies his admission to the SCRA 2011 examination.

Note IV :

Diplomas in Engineering awarded by the State Boards of Technical Education are not acceptable for SCRA admission to the Special Class Railway Apprentices’ Examination.

SCRA Exam 2011 Physical Standards :

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for SCRA admission 2011 to Special Class Railway Apprentices’ Examination 2011 as per Regulations given in Appendix-II of the rules for the Special Class Railway Apprentices’ Examination 2011 published in Gazette of India dated 26th March, 2011.
